Ticks are a common problem in dogs. They are blood- sucking parasites sticking like warts on the skin, below the hair coat. They not only cause anemia, but also transmit a host of diseases to the animal and the owner (zoonotic diseases).
Usually, the pet- owners are often seen plucking out ticks by hand, by simply pulling them. This is harmful…
1. When the tick is pulled out, most of the time the proglottid breaks (hard spine piercing down across the skin of the dog into the blood vessel), and then causes abscess and allergy.
2. When the tick is pulled out, the tick’s body gets pressed between the fingers, and all the blood inside is pressed inside the dog. This blood is rich in parasites that cause number of diseases dangerous to the dog itself.
The best way to remove the ticks is by using various acaricides e.g. dip/ bath (Cypermethrin, Amitraz etc.), powder formulations (Carbaryl), neck belts (Amitraz), spot-ons, shampoo (Cypermethrin), injection (Ivermectin) etc.
If the ticks really need to be removed physically, it should be done with a pair of forceps, by pressing the tick’s proglottid down over the skin and pulling it out (and not the tick itself from the body). It is recommended to be doe by a qualified vet, who is already well experienced with the technique.
